Service Package for Youth

-        Geographical / Social mapping of youth (In school, out of school youth, working etc.)

-          Hiring, training and supervision of staff and/or peer educators to undertake BCC activities

-          Review and revision of BCC strategy and activities based on revised mapping, project experience and behavioral surveillance results

-          Detailed BCC strategy plan for prevention of HIV transmission both through injections sharing and unprotected sex, based on the information from mapping

 

-          Counseling regarding encouraging and promoting safe behaviors (Smoking hazards etc.)  

-         Youth friendly services

-        Inclusion of VCT education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

-       Provision of VCT training to project staff to ensure accessible and acceptable services for youth

-      Monitoring of the experience of youth in accessing VCT services, and taking remedial action for improving VCT educational activities and testing facilities

-         Inclusion of condom education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

-        Provision of condoms to peer educators for distribution to youth

-          Inclusion of STI education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

-          Provision of STI services including referral where appropriate

-          Ensure that condom promotion and distribution are undertaken in local STI services used by youth

-           Inclusion of VCT education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

-          Establishment and linkage with local VCT services to ensure that youth have effective and appropriate access to services

-         Monitoring the experience of youth in accessing VCT services, and taking remedial actions in the VCT educational activities and with the VCT services where needed

-      Development of a plan to promote a more positive environment for HIV prevention, based on the information from mapping of youth

-      Undertaking advocacy and educational activities to promote understanding of local police officials and other public sector officers towards the importance of HIV prevention.

-      Identification of potential youth leaders

-      Monitoring the local environmental factors which might affect ability of youth to protect them from HIV infection

-      Development and implementation of empowerment activities (based on the information obtained from mapping

-      Development of a referral system for other key support activities, such as legal services

-      Youth friendly activities (Recreational activities) & community support groups

 

In School Youth

 Formal and informal structures and institutions to increase awareness:

 -          Review/development of a culturally sensitive curriculum and instructional package for students and teachers at secondary and college levels with a focus on increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS

-          Training teachers through in-service training to enhance their knowledge to use the above curriculum.

-          Undertaking HIV/AIDS education using innovative approaches, including such activities as debate clubs, theatre groups, sensitization sessions.

Developing/reviewing and dissemination of materials for youth on HIV/AIDS through mass media and audio/video cassettes.
